VALUES DRIVEN LEARNING
Please find below an overview of year four’s curriculum for 2024/25
At Litherland Moss we have a values driven approach to learning. Below is the ‘Rainbow Pathway’ for our current curriculum focus.
Science: Life Cycles and reproduction : Animals including humans
In Year 5, pupils will explore the life cycles and reproductive processes of animals, including humans. This unit will cover the stages of life from birth to adulthood, focusing on growth, development, and reproduction in different animal species, including humans. Pupils will learn about the different life cycles, the importance of reproduction for the continuation of species, and how life cycles vary between animals. By the end of the unit, pupils will have a strong understanding of life cycles and reproduction in animals, including humans. They will be able to explain the different stages of life in animals, recognise the importance of reproduction for species survival, and understand human growth and development.
History: Ancient Greece
In Year 5, pupils will explore the fascinating civilisation of Ancient Greece. This unit will introduce students to the history, culture, and achievements of one of the most influential civilisations in history. Pupils will learn about Ancient Greek society, its political systems, famous figures, mythology, and contributions to art, science, and philosophy. By the end of the unit, pupils will have developed a comprehensive understanding of Ancient Greek civilisation and its enduring impact on modern society. They will appreciate the cultural, intellectual, and artistic achievements of the Ancient Greeks, and how these have influenced various aspects of life today.
Design & Technology: Cooking and nutrition - Developing a recipe
In this unit, pupils will explore the process of food production, with a specific focus on beef production. They will learn how beef is produced, from farm to table, including the ethical and environmental considerations involved. Pupils will then research a traditional recipe, such as bolognese sauce, and make changes to it based on their understanding of nutrition. They will gain practical skills by preparing and cooking a version of bolognese sauce, considering the nutritional value of each ingredient they choose. By the end of this unit, pupils will have a deeper understanding of food production, the ability to research and adapt recipes, and enhanced cooking skills, all while considering the nutritional benefits of their choices.
PE: Basketball
Pupils will be introduced to basketball, focusing on developing their skills in passing, shooting, dribbling, and teamwork. This unit will emphasise not only the physical skills needed to play basketball, but also an understanding of the rules of the game, strategies for success, and the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship. By the end of this unit, pupils will have developed a basic understanding of basketball, honed their skills, and gained experience of playing the game while working effectively as part of a team. They will also have a greater appreciation for the importance of fitness, strategy, and sportsmanship in basketball.
Class Novel: Scrap by Guy Bass
"Scrap" by Guy Bass is a children's novel that follows the adventures of a small, scrappy robot named Scrap. Scrap was created to be a discarded, broken-down machine with little value. However, despite his humble beginnings, Scrap has a strong sense of curiosity and a desire to find his place in the world.
The story revolves around Scrap's journey to discover his true purpose, which takes him through a series of challenges and exciting encounters. Along the way, he learns about friendship, resilience, and the importance of never giving up, no matter how small or insignificant you might feel.
This heartwarming and adventurous tale is a blend of humour, fantasy, and emotional depth, making it a captivating read for young readers. Scrap's journey is both inspiring and entertaining, highlighting themes of self-worth and determination.
In Year 5 we love to read together and independently. Please remember to read at home as often as you can.

Spellings:
Spellings are sent home every Friday, and a spelling test will take place the following Friday. We encourage you to practise these with your child at home.
TimesTables
In Year 5, we work very hard to continue to learn our timestables. Please practice these as often as you can. Memorising timetables strengthens our ability to perform mental maths. Timestables are important for completing standardised tests, like SATS, in a timely manner.
