VALUES DRIVEN LEARNING

Please find below an overview of year four’s curriculum for 2024/25

At Litherland Moss we have a values driven approach to learning. Below is the ‘Rainbow Pathway’ for our current curriculum focus.

Science: Properties of Material

Students will explore the properties of everyday materials, such as hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity, and magnetism, and classify them accordingly. They will learn to justify the use of materials like metals, wood, and plastic through evidence from fair tests. The curriculum includes understanding reversible changes like dissolving, mixing, and state changes, as well as irreversible changes, such as burning and chemical reactions (e.g., acid and bicarbonate of soda). Pupils will study solutions, including how to dissolve substances and recover them, and learn methods to separate mixtures using filtering, sieving, and evaporating.

History: Anglo-Saxons

Students will study the Anglo-Saxons, exploring their settlement in Britain after the Roman withdrawal. They will learn about their daily life, culture, and societal structures, including roles within villages, laws, and justice systems. The curriculum covers the reasons for their migration, their impact on Britain, and how they shaped the landscape, including place names and language. Key historical events, such as the resistance to Viking invasions and the creation of kingdoms, will also be explored. The significance of Christianity's spread during this period and the legacy of Anglo-Saxon art, literature, and archaeology (e.g., Sutton Hoo) will be examined. Pupils will also compare life during the Anglo-Saxon era to life today, analysing similarities and differences in areas such as governance, daily living, and cultural practices.

Design & Technology: Pop-Up Books

In Year 5 Design and Technology, pupils will design and create an interactive pop-up storybook, focusing on both the structure and the mechanisms within it. They will begin by producing a detailed plan for each page of the book, ensuring the layout aligns with the story. Pupils will then create the book’s structure, assembling all necessary components for the mechanisms, while hiding mechanical elements with additional layers and spacers for a polished finish. They will incorporate a variety of interactive features, such as sliders, pop-ups, and flaps, to engage the reader and make the story more dynamic. Finally, students will select suitable materials and add captions that complement the story, enhancing the visual and interactive experience for the user.

PE: Swimming

In Year 5 swimming, pupils will develop their water confidence and swimming skills, aiming to swim at least 25 meters using strokes like front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke. They will focus on improving technique, efficiency, and coordination while also learning safe self-rescue skills in different water situations. The curriculum emphasises refining breathing techniques and building stamina to help pupils swim confidently and safely in a variety of water-based activities.

Class Novel: Wonder by R. J. Palacio

R. J. Palacio’s “Wonder” tells the story of August ‘Auggie’ Pullman, a boy with a craniofacial deformity that kept him from school, getting to attend school for the first time. It deals with issues such as kindness, empathy, self-acceptance, and discrimination against people with disabilities.

Reading

In Year 5 we love to read together and independently. Please remember to read at home as often as you can.

Spellings:

Spellings are sent home every Friday, and a spelling test will take place the following Friday. We encourage you to practise these with your child at home.

TimesTables

In Year 5, we work very hard to continue to learn our timestables.  Please practice these as often as you can. Memorising timetables strengthens our ability to perform mental maths. Timestables are important for completing standardised tests, like SATS, in a timely manner.
